I loved teaching poetry when I taught English. Students always brought in songs that they loved, and I think that is great!! I love music as poetry!!!
I’m sharing today a song that I heard the other day! I was listening to Freebird station on Sirius Radio. Someone from the Lyndard Skynard band was being interviewed about the song Simple Man. He said he and another band member wrote it one afternoon when they were talking about their mothers!! I loved that!
He also said that when they sing this at concerts (especially concerts for our service men and women) he sees so many people crying out in the audience.
They played the song, and I hadn’t heard it in so long. It was such a treat to hear it again!! It made me think of my son, and what mother’s want for their children!!
So here you are. I hope you enjoy it!!!
Simple Man
Lyndard Skynard
(Gary Rossington – Ronnie Vanzant)
Mama told me when I was young
Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say.
And if you do this
It’ll help you some sunny day. Oh Yah!
Oh, take your time… Don’t live too fast,
Troubles will come and they will pass.
You’ll find a woman, yea yea, you’ll find love,
And don’t forget son,
There is someone up above.
[Chorus:]
And be a simple, kind of man.
Oh be something, you love and understand.
Baby be a simple, kind of man.
Oh, won’t you do this for me son,
If you can?
Forget your lust, for the rich man’s gold
All that you need, is in your soul,
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try.
All that I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.
[Chorus:]
Boy, don’t you worry… You’ll find yourself.
Follow your heart, lord, and nothing else.
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try.
All that I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.
[Chorus:]
Baby be a simple, be a simple man.
Oh be something, you love and understand.
Baby be a simple, kind of man. (Fade out)
